September 16, 17, 18 - Phoenix Club Oktoberfest. Opening weekend for the Phoenix Club's Oktoberfest will be September 16, 17 and 18. • September 30 - Gospel Choir "Gospel Music Month" concert. The APU Gospel Choir, led by Mrs. Letitia Ugweueke, will present a concert celebrating the music of Kirk Franklin. Performances will include the APU Gospel Worship Team, Gospel Choir, and several groups from the surrounding communities. The event will begin at 8 p.m. in the Munson Chapel, East Campus.

September 11 - 9/11 Memorial Dedication and Ceremony. The City of Beverly Hills will host a dedication ceremony and unveiling of the 9/11 Monument/Memorial Project from 4 - 6 p.m. The program will take place from 4 - 6 p.m. in the Beverly Hills Memorial Garden at Rexford Drive/Burton Way. Due to the event, Rexford Drive will be closed off from Burton Way to the public parking structure. Access to the parking structure will be available from Santa Monica Boulevard. BREA

Brea Jazz Festival - Concerts are every Friday and Saturday night from September 2 - 24, and the Festival takes place on Birch Street (at Brea Blvd. one block north of Imperial Highway). Performances are from 7:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. Seating is provided or bring your lawn chairs, and reserved seating is also available (fee). There will also be a fine arts and crafts show beginning on Fridays at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at noon, a beer and wine garden, kids zone and more. September 11 - Patriot Day 10th Anniversary Evening of Remembrance. Cerritos residents and community members are invited to attend the special Evening of Remembrance and Candelight Memorial to be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Cerritos Civic Center. The evening will begin with a patriotic music prelude performed by the Cerritos Community College Band at 6:15 p.m. The event will be held in honor of the victims and heroes of 9/11 and will include performances by local choral groups and bands, a formal ceremony with the City Council, a candlelight memorial and a moment of silence. In addition, since September is "National Preparedness Month," volunteers from the city's Community Emergency Response Team and Volunteers on Patrol will offer information to help residents prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. CITY OF INDUSTRY

September 10 and 11 - Ticket to the Twenties Festival at the Homestead Museum. The festival celebrates the Roaring '20s with two days of dance demonstrations and lessons with the Hollywood Hotshots, silent film screenings with musical accompaniment by Michael Mortilla, ukulele sing-alongs and lessons, Mah-Jongg tutorials, historic house tours, crafts, music, games, vintage automobiles and food vendors. On Saturday there also will be music by Dean Mora and His Modern Rhythmists with emcee Maxwell De Mille, and Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys, plus fashion shows coordinated by costumer Natalie Meyer. On Sunday there will be music by Ian Whitcomb and His Dance Band and the Night Blooming Jazzmen, plus a fashion show by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and Chuck Kovac portraying Will Rogers. 1920s dress is encouraged, bring blankets or lawn chairs for the outdoor concerts, and Prohibition will be strictly enforced. • September 16 - Pomona College: Songs of America. Thomas Hampson, baritone, and Vlad Iftinca, piano. The program will include music by Bernstein, Copland, Foster, Ives, Still and other American composers. The performance will take place at 8 p.m. in Bridges Hall of Music, 150 E. 4th Street, and although the performance is free, tickets will be required. • September 20 - Scripps College: Mariachi Mujer. The allstar female mariachi group performed in the 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing as the sole musical ensemble representing the continent of North America. The program is part of the Humanities Institute's "Performing the Body Politic" program and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center, 241 E. 10th Street. Saturdays and Sundays, September 3 - 25 - Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza. - The 10th Annual Festival of Children is a month-long celebration of the wonders of childhood with celebrity appearances, music and dance performances, activities and workshops. Most events are Saturdays and Sundays between noon and 5 p.m. in the Carousel and Jewel Courts of South Coast Plaza, Bristol St./405 Freeway. October 2 - Segerstrom Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary Performances. Cameron Carpenter Organ Recital. Sometimes called the "bad boy" of the organ world, Carpenter is considered a revolutionary in his field. He is a popular concert hall artist, performs with pop singers, and is a frequent guest soloist with international symphony orchestras. His performance will take place at 1 p.m. in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The performance is free but tickets are required and can be reserved via the SCFTA website. October 2 - Segerstrom Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary Performances. Ozomatli. The multi Grammy Award-winning band will present a free concert at 5 p.m. on the Arts Plaza at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Plaza will open at 10 a.m.; no reserving of space will be allowed before that time. Capacity is limited in the Plaza, and once capacity has been reached, no one else will be allowed in. No animals, coolers, BBQs, alcohol or glass containers allowed. It is recommended that you call/check the site for any information updates prior to the end of the week (9/30). September 24 - Covina Swing Band Festival. The Covina Concert Band presents the third annual Covina Swing Band Festival. The festival will include six live swing bands performing between 3 and 9 p.m. Performances will be: Covina Concert Band Swing Band at 3 p.m., The Harmony Sisters at 4 p.m., the Riverside Swing Ensemble at 5 p.m., Palminteri and the Big Band at 6 p.m., Music Masters at 7 p.m. and the LAPD Swing Band at 8 p.m. The event will take place at the Covina Park bandshell, Badillo/4th Street. October 1 - Thunderfest Car Show and Music Festival. The 2011 Thunderfest and Music Festival will take place from 1 - 8 p.m. along and around Citrus Avenue in downtown Covina. Thunderfest features over 200 vintage and custom street rods and over 50 NHRA race cars. The Music Festival will include on four outdoor and several indoor stages. Bands appearing will include Cold Duck, Chico's Bail Bonds, Reno Jones, Suave the Band, Rusty Venture and many others. See website for full concert line-up. The Downtown Culver City "Summer in the City" takes place every third Wednesday of the month from 5 - 9 p.m. The event will include live music under the stars, plus a chance to shop and sample from one-of-a-kind boutiques and view art at gallery openings. The event will also will feature special offers from businesses throughout the downtown area, as well as outdoor entertainment and other activities. September 10 and 11 - Toshiba Tall Ships Festival - The Tall Ships Festival is the largest gathering of tall ships on the West Coast. The festival will feature an array of both paid and free family activities including live chantey music, an art show, living history demonstrations, and food vendors. Grass Park activities (the Chantey concerts, arts and crafts show, interactive encampments and vendor area) are free. Fees for entry to Ocean Education Center, Tallship tours and cruises. September 27 - Community Folk Music Jam. At this folk music jam, the participants sit in a circle formation with their acoustic instruments. Facilitators ensure a continuum of activity throughout the jam; guests and other non-musician visitors may sit outside the circle as space permits. September 24 - Salute to Route 66 Parade and Picnic The Salute to Route 66 parade will begin at 10 a.m. along Huntington Drive between Cotter and Mt. Olive in Duarte and will feature antique and classic cars, marching bands, equestrian units and local community groups. This year's theme is "Get Your Groove on Route 66," and the Grand Marshal is NBC's Chuck Henry. Following the parade from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. there will be a picnic in Royal Oaks Park 2627 Royal Oaks Drive. The picnic will include food, game and display booths, a car show, an arts and crafts show, entertainment and other activities. September 17 - El Segundo Concerts in the Library Series Bandidos de Amor (Noveau Flamenco). "Nouveau Flamenco" is a unique style of music quietly brewing in the clubs and cafes around Southern California and the South Miami Beach area which is influenced by European and South American Rumba styles. September 4 - Target Sundays at the California African American Museum. "Caribbean Fete." The program will include a variety of calypso, punta, soca, salsa and reggae performances. September 25 - "Grand Performances" Programs. Composer/Singer Galeet Dardashti. Galeet Dardashti will perform Monajat (fervent prayer), an evening of Middle Eastern musical poetry sung during the month preceding the Jewish New Year as a means of spiritual reflection and spiritual preparation. Dardashti reinvents Persian melodies and Hebrew texts with electronic soundscapes and video projections. The program will take place at 8 p.m. in Watercourt at California Plaza, 300 - 350 S. September 27 - USC "Visions and Voices" Series Signature Event. An Evening of Poetry and Music with Dana Gioia. The USC "Visions and Voices" series welcomes internationally-acclaimed and award-winning poet Dana Gioia in an evening featurong Gioia in conversation with University Professor Kevin Starr to illuminate Gioia’s unique and influential career. Readings by Gioia and musical performances will be interspersed throughout the evening. Special guest artists will include Grammy-nominated baritone Rod Gilfry and renowned composer Morten Lauridsen. Los Angeles City College Noontime Concerts. The Concert Series is a one-unit class with performances open to visitors and guests from campus and the community. All performances take place from 12:10 p.m. - 1:10 p.m. Due to current work being done in Claussen Hall, this semester's concerts will take place in Da Vinci Hall Room 302 (band room).
