A WARM WELCOME TO 2026 SUMMER GUEST ARTIST PHOTOGRAPHER MICHAEL GRAVES. Over the years the site has welcomed artists whose works in some way express or interpret the summer theme. This summer the site theme deals with road trips and more specifically the Route 66 Centennial. Michael Graves has spent time photographing much of Route 66 in California, and his photographs will be found on this page. ARTIST STATEMENT. For more than a decade, I have photographed Route 66 across the American Southwest, including extensive work in both Arizona and California. The photographs presented here focus on a chapter of that broader project, concentrating exclusively on the California experience of the Mother Road, with particular attention to San Bernardino County. Through images of aging motels, fading signs, abandoned buildings, original roadway segments, and the painted "66" shield, the work documents how a single region carries the weight of a national narrative. With many of the photos rendered in black and white, these places are stripped of nostalgia and presented as cultural artifacts - evidence of a road that once shaped migration, commerce, and imagination. While my larger body of work spans state lines, these photographs mark the Route 66 centennial by honoring how its legacy endures locally in the landscapes that still stand. Created over a decade, these photographs document motels, weathered signs, abandoned buildings, bridges, and the painted "66" shield. Spanning this entire California passage, the work preserves the physical remnants of Route 66 after one hundred years, where the road
completes its westward journey. Through the interplay of light and shadow, manufactured objects, roadside landmarks, and natural landscapes, I have sought to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, revealing quiet beauty shaped by time, history, and the enduring American landscape.

The City of Beverly Hills presents the 2026 season of Concerts on Canon with concerts on Thursday nights from 6 - 8 p.m. Concerts take place at the Beverly Canon Gardens, 241 N.
