April 29 - UCLA Hammer Museum Programs. Sacred Sounds: Reflections on Alice Coltrane. Artists, scholars and musicians will present insights into Alice Coltrane's impact with presentations and conversations, and there will be an evening performance by Sune Woods. April 29 and 30 - UCLA Lectures/Symposia. On April 29 at 7 p.m. in Lani Hall, UCLA and the Gramian-Emrani Center for Iranian Music will present a conversation with prominent Iranian composer Sadegh Nojouki. The program will be presented in Persian. An RSVP is not required. On April 30 at 1 p.m. in Schoenberg Music Building Room B544, Michael A. May 1 - UCLA Lectures/Symposia. Book talk with author Jesica Rode titled "For Women and Girls Only: Reshaping Jewish Orthodox Through the Arts in the Digital Age," a groundbreaking novel on the reversal of mainstream portrayals of ultra-Orthodox religious women and those who have left the community yet maintain ties to it. It is the first work to focus on the ultra-Orthodox female art scene in music, film and dance across North America and on social media. The program will take place at 2 p.m. in Royce Hall 314. May 2 and 3 - Litfest in the Dena. LitFest in the Dena will take place on Friday from 6 - 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Boulevard in Playhouse Village. The theme of the festival is "Books That Teach Us About Character." There will be panels, workshops and readings. May 3 and 4 - Brewery Artwalk. The Brewery Artwalk is a twice-yearly open studio weekend at the world's largest art complex, with over 100 participating resident artists. Attendees will have the opportunity to see new works, discover new favorites, speak with the artists and purchase artwork directly from the studios. Hours are from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., and parking and admission are free. The Brewery is located at 2100 Main Street in Los Angeles. Information: www.breweryartwalk.com.
May 3 and 4 - Sierra Madre Art Fair. Sierra Madre's annual celebration of the arts will take place Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. in Memorial Park, 222 West Sierra Madre Boulevard (at the Civic Center). There will be over 70 artists displaying their works, craft projects, food/drink vendors and live music throughout the day. The full entertaiment schedule should be available online. May 6 - ALOUD LA Programs. "Rasquachismo in Art and Life: Cheech Marin and Josh T. Franco in Conversation." In Chicano communities, the term rasquache has been reclained from a slur to a badge of pride, expressing a sensibility - rasquachismo - characterized by inventiveness and creativity, often in response to material limitations. Actor, comedian, musician and Chicano art advocate Cheech Marin will discuss this attitude in relationship to the artworks at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture in Riverside. Josh T. Franco is the collector at large at the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. The program will take place at 7 p.m. in the Mark Taper Auditorium of the Los Angeles Central Library, 630 W. 5th Street. Reservations are required. May 7, 12 and 13 - UCLA Lectures/Symposia and Other Programs. On May 7 at 5 p.m. via Zoom, "Driven Into Paradise:" Schoenberg in Los Angeles. In the online program, historians, musicologists and composers will explore Schoenberg's complex relationship with Los Angeles. On May 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ackerman Bruin Reception Room, "A Seat at the Table: Music Industry Networking Night." A variety of music industry representatives will gather for conversations providing perspective about building a successful career in music. On May 13, two programs. At 10 a.m. via Zoom, "Exploring the Opera - Schoenberg in Hollywood, an Online Discussion." The program will feature Tod Machover, Peter Kazaras and Joe Auner discussing the new opera "Schoenberg in Hollywood." Also at 4:30 p.m. in the Green Room (1230 Schoenberg Music Building), the Musicology Distinguished Lecture Series will present Nate Sloan. He will present reflections and insights based on his ten years of producing the Switched on Pop podcast, a podcast which explores the making and meaning of popular music. May 10 and 11 - Sunset Beach Art Festival. The Sunset Beach Art Festival will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. along the greenbelt between N. Pacific and S. Pacific from Broadway to 7th Street, community center and Firehouse Gallery. There will be works by more than 150 artists for sale, including paintings, jewelry and handmade clothing. The Community Center and Firehouse are on 12th Street, and there also will be entertainment and a juried exhibit there. May 11 - UCLA Hammer Museum Programs. Screeining of "Cabaret," starring Liza Minelli and Joel Grey; directed by Bob Fosse. Cabaret looks at the decadence and darkness of Nazism's rise in Germany through glitzy-framed glasses that are far from rose-tinted. The screening will take place at 7 p.m., and tickets are available on a first-come basis beginning one hour prior to the event. May 17 and 18 - Beverly Hills Art Show. The event takes place from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. both days. Nearly 250 artists exhibit their works outdoors in Beverly Hills in the grassy area of Beverly Gardens Park along Santa Monica Boulevard between Rodeo and Rexford Drives. May 18 - 30th Annual Balboa Island Art Walk.. The Balboa Island Art Walk will take place from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. along South Bayfront Promenade on Balboa Island. There will be open galleries, exhibits and a variety of live music. Maps will be available the day of the event. Please note: parking is extremely limited, and there will not be shuttle service this year. The Balboa Peninsula parking lot is located at the end of 55 South/Newport Boulevard at Palm Street, with ferry service across to Balboa Island. May 18 - UCLA Hammer Museum Programs. Schoenberg in Hollywood: The Making of a Modern Opera. Composer Tod Machover will discuss his innovative new opera Schoenberg in Hollywood with conductor Neal Stulberg, director Karole Armitage and Arnold Schoenberg's son Larry Schoenberg, moderated by UCLA musicology professor Joy Calico. The opera will make its West Coast premiere at UCLA later in the evening. The program will take place at 1:30 p.m., and seating is on a first-come basis. June 1 - Yorba Linda Arts Alliance Foundation Celebration of the Arts and Music Festival. The fine arts and music festival will take place from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Hurless Barton Park and the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House, 4701 Casa Loma Ave. in Yorba Linda (just off Imperial Highway). June 7 - Irvine Studio Arts Festival. The Studio Arts Festival will take place from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. outdoors in Heritage Community Park at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, 14321 Yale Avenue. The annual juried festival will include original works of art by over 100 artists in ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography, fiber and glass, plus music, art demonstrations and food available for purchase. LONG BEACH - KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND (TURN)TABLE. Knights of the Round (Turn)Table is a monthly event modeled after a book club. Back in the day, people used to listen to the records while staring at the album artwork and liner notes. The programs seek to recreate this experience in the company of other music lovers. LOS ANGELES COUNTY - LACMA SPRING PROGRAMS The Los Angeles County Museum of Art makes available a publication called The Guide.
