A WARM WELCOME TO 2025 SUMMER GUEST ARTIST PHOTOGRAPHER MARK COMON. Over the years the site has welcomed artists whose works in some way express or interpret the summer theme. This summer the site theme deals with "Nature in a Different Light," or more specifically the use of infrared photography in caputuring images of nature and other scenes. Mark Comon is a South Bay photographer with an extensive portfolio of infrared images. You can read more about his images below and about him on the site's Guests page. ABOUT INFRARED/ARTIST STATEMENT. I LOVE Infrared (IR) photography because it provides me another creative outlet. IR images possess a unique look and feel and offer me the ability to produce quality photographs in the middle of the day. I have chosen the 720 nanometer (720 nm) spectrum for my IR images (though there also are other choices). My 720 nm converted camera produces three unique looks (there are even more possibilities with different processing options). The most popular is black and white with white foliage, dark skies and fantastic tonality in bright sunshine. Landscape and travel photos resonate spectacularly with this effect. 720 nm IR portraits and people photos feature dreamy "alabaster" skin and haunting eyes. IR portraits are not for every subject but can be truly amazing. How I process an image depends on the subject, lighting, and what the processing brings to the photo. Other processing options exist and are being explored every day. Most of my IR photos are shared as black and white images.

Color photographers are always looking for the best light in the golden hours of the early morning and late afternoon for the best photos. Traditional black and white photographers are drawn to the quiet light before sunrise and after sunset and soft light during the day. Mid-day sun is too harsh and a great challenge for traditional photographers because of the bright highlights and deep shadows. IR photographers relish the noon-day sun and the opportunities it presents: sun and shadows, plant life and sky and intense tones. As a photographer who loves the opportunity to shoot all day I appreciate the opportunities that IR provides, seeing and capturing what a "normal" camera struggles to record.

Once I'm back to the computer with my RAW IR files, the next level of creativity begins. IR photos can be processed as deep and rich black and white images, images with a warm sepia color effect or ones with an alternative false color effect.

CLAREMONT - CLAREMONT FRIDAY NIGHTS LIVE. The Friday night concert series takes place through October at locations in Claremont Village. Regular performances are from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Village Square (VS), 101 North Indian Hill Boulevard, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce (CC), 205 Yale Avenue (at Second Street) and Shelton Park (SP, Bonita/Harvard). INDIO - OUTDOOR MUSIC AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO. Deja Vu (Crosby, Stills and Nash Tribute) with C4. Outdoor music returns to the Rock Yard at Fantasy Springs on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. Guests must be 18 or over. The Rock Yard is an amphitheater-style arena with two side-by-side stages, and admission is free. Fantasy Springs Resort Casino is located at 84-245 Indio Springs Parkway. NEWPORT BEACH - TUNES AT THE DUNES. Tunes at the Dunes concerts will take place over the Labor Day weekend at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina, 1131 Back Bay Drive. Programs will take place from 5 - 8 p.m., and bands will be: August 29 - Kelly Boyz Band (Country), August 30 - Family Style (Blues/Soul/Rock 'n Roll), and August 31 - Flashback Heart Attack (80s). ORANGE - ORANGE INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR. The Orange International Street Fair will take place on Friday from 5 - 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. in the blocks surrounding the Orange traffic circle at Glassell/Chapman Avenue. The event includes multiple blocks of international food and music organized around country themes, including multiple music stages. Please note: this event tends to be VERY crowded, and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. SANTA MONICA - SOUNDS OF SANTA MONICA. Sounds of Santa Monica is a music series at the Santa Monica Place mall. LOS ANGELES (SOUTH AND EAST) - 6TH ANNUAL LEIMERT PARK JAZZ FESTIVAL. The 4th Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival will take place from 12:30 - 8:30 p.m. (doors open at 11:30 a.m.) on the rooftop parking deck at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, 3650 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. SAN PEDRO - LIGHT AT THE LIGHTHOUSE FESTIVAL. The Light at the Lighthouse Festival, a Christian music festival, will take place from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Mesa/6th Street in downtown San Pedro. SANTA ANA - KCRW SUMMER NIGHTS. KCRW Summer Nights at the Bowers Museum. The event will include live sets from KCRW DJs Raul Campos and Jason Kramer, pop-up bars, activities for kids and more. The galleries will be open late, but please note that admission to the KCRW event does not include museum admission. There will be a fee for museum admission and an extra surcharge for a ticket to view the Terracotta Warriors exhibit. The Bowers Museum is located at 2002 N. Main Street.
